Time to "Go Fast!"
It's been a long road (start singing if you want), but Star Trek: Prodigy will finally have it's second season available to its English-speaking audience. Netflix has announced that the second season will begin streaming on their service on July 1st. All twenty episodes of the second season of Trek's animated kid's show will drop on that day.
The drop of the new season will come almost exactly one year after the first was removed from Paramount+, with grave doubt cast upon whether or not the second series would actually see the light of day. A stunning campaign by fans to #SaveStarTrekProdigy which included hashtags, petitions, letter writing and even a banner flown over Los Angeles led to the show being picked up by Netflix.
Some fans have already had the pleasure of seeing season two, as long as they parle français, with the French public television network France Télévisions in March on their VOD service france.tv.
The July 1st release of season two will still not be a world-wide release, with Canada, Nordics, CEE, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belarus, and Mainland China excluded. It has been announced that other services will be carrying the show in these territories, but there is no word on just when they will actually drop.
The lack of a coordinated release is a frustration in these days of worldwide connectivity via the internet. French fans were incredibly good about not sharing spoilers for the series, but with the wider release, it seems unlikely that fans in the excluded countries will be able to avoid hearing about what happens to Dal, Gwyndala, Jakon Pog, Zero, Rok-Tahk, and Murf.
Even with the excluded territories, it's an exciting day for Trek fans. We've been breathlessly waiting for a year to find out when we were going to be able to find out what happened to the young heroes formerly of the USS Protostar. Come July 1st, there will be a frantic binging of the episodes to know exactly what happens in the search for Captain Chakotay.
While there have been many bumps in the road, Trek fans are just happy the series will be available. Stay tuned for more news, as Strange New Pod will keep up to date on the release of a trailer, promotional images and other news on the release. We are currently planning how will we tackle our coverage for Trek's first full-season release.
