One Last Time, One Final Discovery
It is a sad day for the Star Trek fandom as news broke across social media today that Star Trek Discovery’s long-anticipated fifth season will, in fact, be its last. That’s right: Season 5, set to debut sometime in 2024, will be the final voyage for Michael and her crew.
In the statement released from Star Trek’s official social media accounts, lead actor Sonequa Martin-Green and show-runners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise offered this:
“The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek and an entire entertainment platform, and we’ll never forget it. Sixty-five episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans, and to all those who envision a better future. Let’s fly...” -Sonequa Martin-Green.
“Your love for these characters and your excitement for every episode, every season, has meant the world to us. We can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on for this final season: we appreciate your patience in the meantime and trust us when we say it’ll be worth the wait. We love you all! LLAP” -Alex Kurtzman, Michelle Paradise
The news comes as quite a shock for us here at Strange New Pod. Discovery brought Star Trek back to television after a 12-year absence and helped shepherd the franchise into the streaming era of television, with new projects following in its wake, like Picard, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds. Its cultural impact and message of inclusion cannot be lauded enough, and the performances from the main cast (SMG, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Mary Wiseman, Emily Coutts, and Oyin Oladejo) made these characters beloved.
Needless to say, we here at SNP will be here to cover each episode of the fifth and final season, and we hope the characters will eventually find their way back into other Star Trek projects.
