The Star Trek universe is getting a little more animated. As previously talked about in this blog in our coverage of San Diego Comic Con, Paramount will be launching a shorts series to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stark Trek: The Animated Series. The latest announcement– and trailer– have given a name to this series: Star Trek: very Short Treks.
The first of these shorts will be released on September 8th, as part of the Star Trek: The Animated Celebration portion of Star Trek Day. It will be available on both StarTrek.com and the Star Trek YouTube channel. The subsequent shorts will be released on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM, PT/1:00 PM, ET. The scheduled episodes:
Sept. 8 – “Skin a Cat”
Sept. 13 – “Holiday Party”
Sept. 20 – “Worst Contact”
Sept. 27 – “Holograms, All the Way Down”
Oct. 4 – “Walk, Don’t Run”
very Short Treks comes from creative consultant Casper Kelly, known for his work on Adult Swim (including the viral video “Too Many Cooks”) as well as his work on Short Treks. Aaron J. Waltke (Writer and Executive Producer on Star Trek: Prodigy) announced via Twitter he wrote “Holograms, All the Way Down.”
During the San Diego Comic Con presentation on the series, Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Armin Shimerman (Quark), and Doug Jones (Saru) were announced to be reprising their roles. Newly announced voice talents are Ethan Peck (Spock), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), Celia Rose Gooding (Nyota Uhura), Connor Trinneer (Trip Tucker), Bruce Horak (Hemmer), Noël Wells (D’Vana Tendi), and George Takei (Hikaru Sulu).
In conjunction with very Short Treks, Casper Kelly has written a comic book for IDW Publishing called Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents the Scheimer Barrier. The first chapter will premiere digitally on StarTrek.com starting September 8th, while subsequent chapters will be released weekly on Wednesdays. Physical copies of the comic will be available at New York Comic Con.
